Once dominated by farming, Kenton County in 2026 is split between its very developed, crowded northern half and its sparsely populated southern half which still has plenty farmland, greenspace and nature.  Current Fiscal Court leaders, all living in the county’s developed northern half, seem hell-bent on forcing their plan for industrial development on the county’s rural southern half.  But a majority of residents in the rural southern half don't like or want it and now they are making a big effort to inform voters about it as the 2026 elections get closer.  How did we get here?

Many living in the remaining rural areas of Northern Kentucky are facing threats from their county governments which want to change zoning or approved land uses to allow new developments ranging from high-density housing to factories, warehouses and data centers.  So it’s not surprising that candidates running for county commissioner in 2026 are being asked about it.  Some candidates say they oppose converting rural and farming areas to other uses without local residents’ approval, but others contend that farmland and rural properties offer the best opportunities for new developments

If you’ve driven recently into southern Kenton County you’ve likely seen signs like this and wondered what they mean. "S.R.I.” is Kenton County government’s abbreviation for its “Site Readiness Initiative” plan which would make preparations to attract manufacturing facilities and warehouses to be built on agricultural and rural lands in the southwestern section of the county between Maher Rd and the Grant County line. Many residents in southern Kenton County strongly oppose this idea, which is why they are buying and posting these signs on their properties.

My grandfather didn’t just buy real estate when he returned from the battlefields of World War II: he secured a legacy. He understood something fundamental as he labored on our family farm in Kenton County—land is the only thing we have that cannot be manufactured. He used to tell us, “Baby, hold on to the farm. They’re not making any more land.” Today, those words feel less like advice and more like a desperate warning.
